How “Furniture” became fashion, and WWD posted it

I wore this particular outfit to Naeem Khan, which was the show I was most excited for this season. I’ve been very excited to see his work for this year so I wanted to put together something special to wear that day. I take a lot of care in what I choose to wear; always ensuring my entire look fits together and describes how I am feeling in that moment. I carefully hand select the vintage pieces I find, restore them to good health, and wear them with pride. The morning before the show, I even made a special appointment with my good friend Heather Schnell to curl my hair in a retro style.

After the show I had asked the lovely couple next to me to take my photo – which they were kind enough to do – even complimenting my outfit in the process. Which is why, during their quick snap, I was so surprised to hear from behind me:

“Wow. That girl looks like vintage furniture. I guess everything gets recycled.” If you’re looking for fashionable furniture, check out these wooden Tv stands.

Fashion is all about expressing yourself. If and when you dislike something that someone else is wearing – and it will happen – it’s important to remember that the things you say are not just harmful, they are rude. I said nothing while my outfit I had worked on for weeks was torn apart in seconds. I knew I felt good in what I was wearing and I wasn’t about to feel bad about it because someone else thought it resembled “furniture.”

So here’s to all the women who choose to wear colour instead of the ubiquitous NYC black, and for stepping out bravely in something totally unexpected.

Here’s to the women that choose not to follow every trend; that wear what makes them feel their absolute best and reflect what they feel. Not what everyone else is choosing to embrace.

This NYFW I learned that when you stay true to yourself and your personal style, wonderful things can happen. After all, fashion is all about expressing yourself. Even if you decide next season to go as a shag carpet.

Thank you for noticing my personal style WWD.

People say the meanest and strangest things- generally from a place of insecurity. You look amazing and like you had a brilliant time!!

This is by far the most unique outfit ever and it’s so refreshing. You kind of remind me of Susie Bubble. Wear whatever you want and feel like a million bucks. 🙂

Don’t ever take comments like that personally, although I know it can be tough not to at times! Your outfit is amazing and I applaud everyone who steps out of the black uniform which rules in the fashion industry. I myself love color and I don’t care what others think! Stay strong! Stay beautiful! Stay unique!

Congratulations on being featured on WWD! That’s awesome and totally well deserved because your style rocks! I sell vintage clothing, so I know first hand the rude things people have said about vintage clothing to me. I’ve had, “Oh so you sell junk.” True story, someone totally said that to me. It used to bother me when I started selling, but now it just rolls off my back. I’ve accepted that some people get it and some people don’t. Like you said, why waste your energy on the lot that don’t. Hear hear for staying true to yourself!

    xo, Jo

Aww I hate it when people are so judgmental! 🙂 Embrace being different and creative. I think there’s come a certain level of artistry to be bold and experimenting fashion. Fashion is not only practical but it’s a form of self-expression so I always appreciate the different styles I see (regardless if it’s something I would or would not wear).

I love NYFW because no one can judge you because everyone is different in their own special way! Vintage looks are my absolute fave, so I am definitely swooning over this number on you 🙂

The thing I like most about fashion is that it really doesn’t matter what anyone thinks of you and you can pretty much wear your personality. You styled this look to perfection babe and I think it looks wonderful!

Fashion is so much like art, in the eye of the beholder ! I love that you stepped out of the traditional look. I just went to my first fashion week this year and it can be fun but also brutal. We all need to rejoice our individual styles, we are all unique. You look beautiful 🙂

This is so fun! I absolutely love it on you – you totally pull this look off. When you take fashion risks not everyone is gonna love them, but that’s the fun in fashion! You’ll never please everyone so the best thing is to always stay true to your personal style, wich you have definitely done.
